Dynamics 365 Business Central Training: Routings

Introduction

Configuring routings in Dynamics 365 Business Central is a critical process to ensure efficient and accurate workflow management within your organization. Routing, in the context of manufacturing and production, refers to the detailed plan that outlines the sequence of operations and processes required to produce a specific item. It includes information such as the machines, resources, and time needed for each operation. This Dynamics 365 Business Central training guide provides a detailed, step-by-step walkthrough to help you configure routings effectively. We will also highlight common pitfalls and provide troubleshooting tips to assist you in overcoming any challenges you might encounter.

Step 1: Accessing the Routings List

To begin configuring routings, you need to access the manufacturing module in Dynamics 365 Business Central.

1. Open Dynamics 365 Business Central.

2. Navigate to the navigation pane and select Manufacturing.

3. Under Product Design, click on Routings.

Step 2: Creating a New Routing

Creating a new routing involves setting up the sequence of operations required to manufacture a product.

1. In the Routings page, click on New.

2. Enter a unique code and description for the new routing.

3. Add the necessary operations by selecting New Line and entering operation details such as Operation No., Work Center, Setup Time, Run Time, and Move Time.

Step 3: Defining Operation Sequences

Defining the sequence of operations ensures that each step in the manufacturing process is carried out in the correct order. There are two main types of sequencing: parallel and serial sequencing.

Parallel Sequencing

In parallel sequencing, multiple operations can occur at the same time. This means that different tasks are performed simultaneously, often in different work centers or machine centers. This approach can significantly reduce the overall production time but requires careful coordination and resource allocation.

Serial Sequencing

In serial sequencing, each operation is performed one after the other in a specific order. This traditional approach ensures that each step is completed before the next one begins. It is simpler to manage but can be slower compared to parallel sequencing.

1. For each operation line, specify the Next Operation No. to indicate the subsequent step in the process.

2. Ensure that all operations have a defined sequence to avoid any disruptions in the workflow.

Step 4: Assigning Work Centers and Machine Centers

Assigning the correct work centers and machine centers to each operation is crucial for accurate time and resource management. But what exactly are work centers and machine centers?

Work Centers are locations within your facility where specific production activities are carried out. These can include areas designated for assembly, packaging, inspection, or any other stage of the manufacturing process. Each work center can perform one or more operations and can have its own capacity constraints and scheduling parameters.

Machine Centers are specific pieces of equipment within a work center that perform particular tasks. For instance, a machine center could be a CNC machine, a drill press, or any other machinery used in the manufacturing process. Machine centers have unique capacities, maintenance schedules, and operational parameters that need to be considered when configuring routing.

1. In the Work Center or Machine Center fields, select the appropriate centers for each operation.

2. Verify that the assigned centers have the capacity to handle the operations as scheduled.

Step 5: Certifying the Routing

Before finalizing the routing configuration, it is important to certify the routing to ensure accuracy and completeness.

1. In the Routings page, locate the Status field.

2. Change the status from Under Development to Certified.

3. Review any certification messages and make necessary adjustments to resolve any issues.

Common Pitfalls and Troubleshooting Tips

Configuring routing can sometimes present challenges. Here are some common pitfalls and troubleshooting tips:

  • Incorrect Operation Sequences: Ensure that all operations have a defined sequence and that there are no loops or missing steps.

  • Capacity Issues: Verify that the assigned work centers and machine centers have the capacity to handle the scheduled operations. Adjust the routing or capacity settings if necessary.

  • Validation Errors: Address any validation errors promptly by reviewing the error messages and making the required corrections.

Conclusion

Configuring routing in Dynamics 365 Business Central is essential for optimizing your manufacturing processes. By following this step-by-step guide, you can ensure that your routing is set up accurately and efficiently. Remember to certify your routing, be mindful of common pitfalls, and use the troubleshooting tips provided to overcome any challenges. With a well-configured routing system, you can streamline your workflows and enhance overall productivity.
